AN AMARANTE HEALTH EXPLORATION

Why is restful sleep difficult?

Sleep is a biological process shaped by timing, habits, medical conditions and the environment—not just a shortage of a sleep supplement.

LEARN FIRST. CHOOSE WISELY.

01 / THE BIGGER PICTURE

Before the ingredient, understand the question.

01

Regular sleep timing, light exposure and sleep opportunity are useful starting points.

02

Sleep apnoea, pain, medications and mood conditions can disrupt sleep and deserve individual assessment.

03

For chronic insomnia, cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is a leading evidence-based treatment.

02 / WHERE SCIENCE HELPS

What the evidence can—and can't—tell us.

Melatonin may have a role in selected circadian-timing problems, such as jet lag, but that is not proof it treats every sleep disorder. Other marketed sleep ingredients often have limited or inconsistent evidence.

Different populations, doses and outcomes can produce different conclusions. A promising biological mechanism is not proof that a product improves health.

03 / QUESTIONS THAT MATTER

Three questions worth asking next.

  1. Is the main problem falling asleep, staying asleep or feeling unrefreshed?
  2. Could an underlying condition or medication be contributing?
  3. Does the study investigate chronic insomnia or a different sleep issue?
